Unhappy Saying Good bye and a final question

Well after just shy of 14 years and 140K miles my '97 has officially died on me. The differential is done and will cost $1600 to repair. Unfortunately at this point I am not ready to sink that much into the car as there are other problems that I'm sure would appear.

While I have not posted much here, this site has been a font of knowledge and a great help in fixing the things that were in the realm of my abilities. But this unfortunately is not.

My question is this. I am told it is only worth $350 for scrap, but short of a differential she ran good. Any way to increase the amount that I can get for it? Any one in the Cleveland area interested in it for a parts car?

Once again thank you for all the assistance I have received and good luck to all Camaro drivers.

Spend $100-$300 on a wrecking yard diff and sell it for what it is worth or keep driving it.

Massey,

While I would love to do just that, I would still need to be able to install the diff and that is beyond my ability, and tool box.

You know anybody that has the tools? This is not a hard job by any means and a floor jack a couple of jack stands and simple shop tools are all that is needed. Once it is installed then bleed the brakes and you are off. How about calling your local shops (or even some wrecking yards can do minor mech work like this for cheap) and see what swapping the diff out would cost? I would imagine that the whole job could be done for around $300 in labor +parts and that would be a good $500 investment to sell a car for over 1K when you are done.

Well this is quite the change of events. I found a rear end for $125 and a buddy of mine will do it for $350. Plus $50 for the tow to get the car home and we have a complete turn around of events.

Good luck to you hopefully you'll be able to take your car on the road again you sound like you definitely don't want to let go of it.

sebi, just not the way I wanted to let it go. Needed to last till summer, so I had the money to make a payment on a different car. But $1600 was just too much for me to swallow. I can handle the $500+ for the moment.

So all is good for the moment and once again camaro forums come thru again.

you can also get a rear for a v6 they are alot cheaper since everybody wants the posi and disk brakes of a v8. I see on craigs every know and then for $50 or free.

dude... a blown diff by NO means is worth getting rid of the car for good. thats an easy fix.. $1,600 is a COMPLETE SHAM. thats no where near the price of the part even with labour.. and that labour is way to high for a pretty easy job..
