Default RPM Issues

See if maybe you guys can help me with this engine RPM issue Ive been having. I have a 00 automatic Z28 Camaro with longtubes and true duals. This problem has become more frequent. I would be driving on the highway around 65-70mph and all of a sudden the engine RPM will increase about 2500 but the speed will stay the same. But then if I step on the gas to increase the speed the RPMs will just skyrocket up past 5000. It has never happened driving around town just on the highway.
Should I try changing the transmission fluid maybe or just spark plugs? Or could this be something bigger like a clutch or transmission problem?

are you saying the rpms actually rise or just the readout of the tach? if the trany is slipping (engine revving but no go) then you could be out of fluid. or the tcc could be disengaging the converter, or the clutches or bands could be goin south. anyways check the fluid level and condition.

Sounds normal to me, like it feels weird but with automatics I think its just the tyranny goin in overdrive, or somethin, my jeep and my dads avalanche do the same thing especially when the trans can't decide what gear it wants to be in, idk about my maro though I don't drive it highway enough

Sounds like a gauge issue to me, unless you can hear and feel your engine revving.

My Avalance would go in and out of OD when climbing hills and what not but it would only go up a couple hundred RPM not a couple thousand.

If the engine is revving and you are not going faster then that is a trans issue.

It is actually the engine is reving higher, like it is very obvious while driving down the highway and I'm normally around 2500 and then it jumps to 5000. It gets quite loud. And yeah I know what overdrive is but this just doesn't feel like that.

Sounds like the trans is having issues to me as well. Might wanna get that looked into soon. Some times it is a simple fix now or a costly fix later.
