Rear Problem....New Here
Hey everyone, my first post, hoping i can get some help with this....
this might be very long, sorry about that
well about 3 months ago i got a camaro from a dealer
that has 93k on it, and the thing has been nothing but problems since the first drive.....after changing opti, water pump, wires, plugs, all vacuum lines, fuel lines, hoses, and much more because of it sitting for years and i had too many rough running problems...
but anyways yesterday i finally finished everything, including the intake manifold that i installed the previous day, and i drove about 40 miles running around making sure the car was finally running how it should (and the oil leak was gone also
)....ran great after 2 months of being in the garage every day, and me putting about 90 miles on it total.
So today i made plans to run a couple places and maybe wax the car and went to autozone and got some things for that......left and car still runs great and i'm in a pretty good mood for the first time in a while
turn left and CLUNK, CLUNK then a loud bang and my heart dropped! after going 10 mph it stopped and i accelerated a little to see if it would happen again and nothing...felt fine. Got to a redlight and let the clutch out really slowly and it was more of clicking really loud and it sounded pretty bad so i had to jump on the highway and get back to my garage quick. There was one more red light about a mile from getting there and this time a god awful bang after it clunked the third time going about 8-10mph and i made it to the garage but my mood and my whole day are completely ruined.
Drove up and back the driveway couple times, only clunks in first, if taking off from second it doesn't make any noise, same with reverse, but my driveway is stone...... I tore the dif cover off and the magnet had about a 6 inch round circle of fresh shavings and a small gouge on the inside of the cover...but there is not one small little chip or even scratch on the ring and pinion. The spider gears i couldn't really tell but i know they turned fine with no noise..untill i removed the differential, now that i took the axles and dif out the spider gears are stuck in place...
The pass. side of the rear i can lift up and down about a foot of play, while driver side is solid and i also noticed that while jacking it up...shock broke maybe?????? Idk what that is but i'm so sick of this working on this thing it has been 15 hour days when including work all day and i am just exhausted and broke.
I would post pics but have no idea how, i may make a link, but any kind of help would be appreciated and i apologize for the extremely long story here but i'm just disgusted by this right now
also want to add in that every single time the clunk, click or bang happenned, the abs inop light comes on..

OK so the abs light will come on as the thing that has chipped off is the abs ring that lets the car the wheels are turning or locked up. I have no idea why this has broken unless there was something in the diff to damage it?
I believe the diff itself will be ok, it the gears are fine and the pinion and bearings are ok. I'd clean all the crap out of the diff and make sure there are now big bits inside to danage anything else. The crap on the magnet is a bit worse than normal but you'd expect some shavings from wear and tear but more so from whatever has broken off inside. Once its all clean just put it back together
You'll need a pair of matched rear shocks too, even second hand ones for now if you're broke.

I just got done putting 4 new shocks on, also I ordered an eaton dif because the spider gears I see now are busted up pretty good.. My major problem right now is I cant find that abs ring anywhere and I need the car for work im tired of getting rides and tired of working on this and waiting. Is there an exact name for that ring? Called the dealer and they said discontinued and a junkyard wants 400 plus and only sells entire rear......can I install the eaton without that abs ring?
you can install the eaton with out the abs ring youd have no rear abs and the light would always be on id call www.hawksthirdgenparts.com and see if they can get you one or some info on getting one somewhere else

You planning on installing it yourself? There is a process involved that is not super complicated but it is super unforgiving. You make one mistake and you will be doing the complete job over 2 months from now.
yes i am doing it myself, i have done around 45 different rear gear changes growing up, my dad always had me doing stuff and he has been working on cars and trucks for 40 years. I know exactly what you mean though, been through it a couple times before tearing it apart again and again.........anyways does the eaton dif need the limited slip additive? I have some laying around unopened but also anyone know if the bearings are the same as a stock dif??
on the 94??? theres 2 speed sensors
Got the dif today, all looks good so far the (new) bearings will work and i just am waiting on that ring with the busted teeth so hopefully tomorrow the car will finally be on the road after work...anyone got any useful suspension diagnosis threads on here?
I'm still worried about why this broke in the first place and even now with the new shocks, my whole rear is like only connected to the frame by the shocks, a rod behind the dif cover, and a long arm that runs up with the driveshaft..... springs aren't broke or wore and the car still did sit level, but the whole rear just doesnt seem to be solidly mounted to the frame....maybe i am used to working on trucks too much I am new to the car world lol
