Question Rear hatch question.

So I was having an issue with my rear hatch releasing with the button on the dash but I got that resolved after some online searching.
Now I'm not sure if this is an issue or just how they are, my hatch doesn't go up by itself I have to lift it.
My '93 was the same way but it was a high mile car and I never pursued it, is the hatch supposed to lift itself?
Do I need new struts or is this normal? It does stay up after I lift it but doesn't raise itself.
Just wondering, if they are supposed to go up any info on the best (not cheapest) replacements would be great if I need new ones.
Thanks in advance for any reply.

FWIW, the trunk lid on my 2000 Vert doesn't go up by itself.

Dash or remote buttons just unlock it.

That's kinda what I figured but never owning or being in a 4th gen when they were new I wasn't sure.
Seems like a bit of a heavy lift though, maybe I should still look into new struts?
They hold it up just fine once it's up however so maybe not.

It's a lot of hassle for a heavy-feeling hatch. If it stays up fine, probably not worth it. Custom hatches are available that are a lot lighter than the stock ones.

ones on the 2000 were shot so i replaced them only to find that once i get it up so far it goes by itself. i was surprised... replaced the ones on the hood and it does the same thing now. get it up a foot or so iand it goes to the top. so then i did it to the 93 same thing, had to lift all the way before and now they go up after i get em up so far.

Well I'm not changing the hatch, I looked at some youtubes about changing the struts, didn't look too bad.

Thanks craby, that's what I was looking for.
I will probably swap them out as a winter project then and do the hood as well.
What brand did you use, do you remember? I've heard some are much better than others.
