Piston question

For my rebuild I planned on getting new pistons, I found the stock size, but what would be the recommended oversize? What rings should I get? And are there any piston/ring kits? I've tried looking around, but I'm honestly pretty confused by everything. I think the engine will be bored about .030 over.

If you are not sure, you can let the machine shop that is doing the work select the proper size and type of pistons and rings. You select the brand and they will place the order, and they may be able to get the parts for a lower price than you could. The good thing is that if the parts do not fit, it is the shop's responsibility to correct the problem.

The overbore size can't be determined until the block is checked for boring. Sometimes one cylinder may need a little more than the rest, and that will set the standard for all of them.

Hm ok, so basically it would be take the block in, have them check it and machine it, then get the pistons and rings according to what they can do?

Yep. I once rebuilt a 4.3 V6 (basically a shorty 350, and uses the same pistons). The machine shop determined that an .030 overbore would do the trick, and I got a set of pistons. After the cylinders were worked over, one of them had to go up to .040 because the hole was on a bias and .030 didn't clean it up. So I had 5 pistons at .030 and one at .040. The .040 piston was the same weight, so it didn't matter. Sometimes even after careful planning, things can still change. At least the unused .030 piston makes for a nifty paper weight!

Its a good idea to have the pistons there as well. If the shop has the pistons they can make sure its a good match and all the specs on right on.
