Default Piped or stock style

I tried searching but didn't find much info on this. I have a 99 Z with headers and magnaflow exhaust. I'm wanting to do something with the intake, just not sure whats the best route...get the SLP air box which bolts up to the stock location or go to O'riley's and get the alumum tubing and couplers and a K&N style filter and plum it so it gets direct air flow. I haven't seen anything that says if one is better then the other. I was thinking the stock style would last longer because there is more surface area on the air filter and its enclosed where as the plumbed is open and would need cleaned regurarly however Im just a highschool kid with chump change... and the plumbed is ALOT cheaper then the SLP box.

Appreciate some insight here,
Thanks RR.

Well... Realistically... The 98+ intake is actually very good. Making it into a tubed CAI isn't really gonna help a lot. It may actually be worse than a FTRA/Whisper Lid set up lol. Don't waste money trying to go cheap on these cars. You get what you pay for... Save up. Get a whisper lid/SLP air lid and a FTRA.

You will thank me later.

have a look at my post on the 'adding 22hp to the ls1' it shows the free ram air mod you can do to the air box base and the trimming of the egr pipe to help with air flow. Get a slp lid and high flow filter K&N or such, and the slp smooth bellow The thread is on the 2nd or 3rd page of this 4th gen section

Should be less than $200 all added up and the free ram air mod makes a difference, my air intake is always freezing
