Default Which one should I buy......

Hello All,

Ok I am going to be buying a 1998 Z28 or 1999 Z28 this weekend and need some help trying to figure out which one to buy.

First, a little history, 3 years ago I bought a 1997 v6 Camaro w/ 100,000 miles. 7,000 miles later the engine bearings are stripped becuase gas got in the oil pan from bad injectors or.. something!! Sold the car without fixing it and said I would never by another Camaro.

I find myself now going to buy another Camaro because I need a new car (current car, a 1989 Corvette needs a engine rebuild, ya I don't have good luck with cars) and I loved my 1997 Camaro so much. Enough on my background.

So I want the LS1 engine because I believe it would not have the injector problem since it is a much better engine.

These are the two cars I am thinking of buying.

1998 Z28, $5,000.00

133,000 miles on body. White, minor paint scratches. LS1 Engine and Auto Trans rebuilt 30,000 miles ago. Original Engine had stripped bears from what was believed to be driving the car to long with low oil, so it was all rebuilt. He has reciepts. Has original injectors though. Leather interior. Stock everything else.

1999 Z28 $6,000.00

92,000 miles, Black, minor scratches. Stock LS1 Engine and Auto Trans well maintened. Flow master K&N Air Filter, after market radio. Cloth interior.

I have no idea which one to get... there are pros and cons to both.. like what if the rebuilt engine fails, or maybe the injectors caused the original stripped engine like my old Camaro!!.... but the 92,000 engine will eventually need the rebuild...... Any help would be great!

The 1999. You don't know the quality of the rebuild on the 1998. Overall the 1999 sounds cleaner and less molested. 92k miles isn't much really, if the car was properly taken care of it should be fine for another 50k at least.

Sounds like a good rebuild from a shop in my town, but ya, that is a concern. The 1999 has more mods, k&n filter, stereo, exhuast.. which is more molested but I guess in a good way.

I agree with Failed Devices, the Z28 with 92,000 miles seems to be the safer choice. My car just turned over 95,000 miles and it still runs pretty good.

alot less miles on the 99, more mods, engine hasnt had any serious work (im assuming), only difference is the interior which you can fairly easily swap for leather if you prefer. and its black lol. i would def go with the 99 if i were you

I vote for the 99 as well. Rebuilt isn't always better. The car may well have been neglected thus causing a need for the rebuild. My 02 Z28 is at 128,XXX and still running strong.

Do you know a good mechanic? Have the cars checked out. Anytime you buy a used car how good it is will come back to how it was used and maintained. I have seen 2002's with 80K on them that where shot and I have seen 98's with 150K that I would not think twice about hopping in and heading accoss country in.

The LS1 is a good motor but it is NOT a more dependable motor then the 3800. It is very common to see 3800's with 200K on them. It is concidered one of GMs best motors for dependablitly.

A GM injector is a GM injector. The only way a injector can cause a motor to fail is if the driver ignores that fact the motor is running like complete crap and drives it anyway. You do that with any motor it will fail. The L89 350 in your Vett is another very dependable motor. It is possible you have really really bad luck, or you bought cars that aleady had issues, or your the problem but so far you have gone thru two motors I would concider as or more dependable then a LS1. You really should get the car your are looking out checked out.
