Default oil pressure

ok ok before everyone goes crazy about an oil pressure issue let me explain. I was test driving a 97 and the oil pressure gauge was going between 20 and 40 while I was going a steady 50 mph. My question is could a bad oil sending unit be causing the gauge to jump between 20 and 40 it was moving very quickly. The oil level was at the full mark and the engine sounded good no unusual noise for a car with 65000 miles. The owner said that the oil light actually has come on while he is driving and he says it in not using any oil.

Sounds like sending unit, wifes 97 intrepid light would come on all the time, checked unit and noticed oil coming out of the sending unit. replaced unit and no problems anymore.
