Default Odd shift **** problem

So this is kind of an odd problem and it's been this way since I got the car. The shift **** button (4 speed auto) on my 95 z28 will stick extremely bad like it's not disengaging when you step on the brakes. What I'm saying is you start the car, put your foot on the brake and when you go to shift you push down the button but it's really, really hard. I have it figured out now but it still takes me 2 hands to do and most shops I take it to have to have me back it out because they can't get it in gear. It's only one owner before me and he said he had the console apart once for something and every since then it's been tough. I've had the console off and I can't find anything wrong with it. It doesn't seem the be related so much to the button itself as it's not disengaging once I hit the break. Once you get it in gear, the button pushes down fine and will even push down easy out of park again as long as you don't take your foot off the break. I told you it's an odd one lol
