Default OBD1 Pin Jumping

Hey guys, I have an intermittent code on my 94 z28 that keeps popping up about once a week. I just tried to jump the pins but it wont go into diagnostic mode, I should also note that I have the low coolant light now and then as well. Has anybody else had luck jumping the two top right pins in the obd1 connector? It would be a very convienient way to pull codes without buying a scanner. Does the code has to be active in order for it to go into diagnostic mode? or should I be able to read stored codes anytime?

you can not flash for the codes on a 94. 93 was the last year.

I have a 94 K2500 and a 98 V6 Camaro and I wanted a code reader that would work on both cars. I purchased the Innova 3120b and I'm very happy with it. It cost from $142 to $200.

It reads OBDI and OBDII.
