Muffler delete ???
#2
On my old 96 Z28 I put on a muffler delete pipe and resonated tips (pic below). It was plenty loud (in a good way) when I wanted it to be, but not bad at all cruising down the highway. Yours is going to be louder than mine was.

With no muffler, you're going to have some raspy ****. I had a little on mine with the resonators, and there was a noticeable difference in sound with and without them. Yeah, it will sound "nice", nice & loud too. Spring for a good catback system? What kind of gains are expected from that section of pipe between the cat and muffler delete? Aftermarket pipes may have better smoother bends than the factory one, but that would be the only minor difference. If your pipes are rotted away that's one thing, otherwise not worth the hundreds of bucks if your existing system is solid.

My takeaway from the thread was as an alternative to spending big $$$ for a cat back thus why I said it might be a good stop gap.

Oh I agree, it is a great alternative. I spent maybe $250 on my exhaust, and with the way it sounded and performed, I'd put it up against any of those high dollar name brand ones. What gets me is how quickly people say (not referring to you) things like ooh...ooh...you gotta get a Borla system, etc. If you end up running that setup with no restrictors, you just spent about $800 for straight pipes, albeit stainless steel...but still.
