LT1 minor bolt on list (Stage 1)
I dont know if you post on Fbodyonline, but, this is off of there. *I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR THIS!*
Hey there. I figured id help all those out there who are looking for a few simple modifications. This thread is in no way meant to copy another or replace one. It is simply an informative thread, placed here to help out a little more than others that I have seen in the past. Included is a list of minor essential bolt ons that will provide a platform for major modifications that one may desire in the future. So without futhur A-do...
Step 1: Cold Air Intake +5-15hp/ +1-3 mpg
Brands:
K&N- $250
SLP-$250
Moroso- $200
Trickflow- $190
Lingenfelter- $160
Ebay- Price varies on company
A cold air intake is a great way to start your engine build. These allow large quantities of densly charged, cold air into your engine. It also directly replaces your stock airbox without any fabrications to your engine bay. They are sensible, cost efficient, and lead to better 1/4 mile times. Remember, the colder your engine running temperature, the better.
Step 2: MAF ends (Mass air flow sensor ends) +5hp or more
Brands:
www.hawksthirdgenparts.com- $90
MAF's are the connection between good air fuel ratios and management of incoming air. These modules measure incoming air (In cfm) and send that data to the cars PCM (94-97 models only), to let it know how much fuel it needs to inject into the cylinder. A ported MAF end can lead to snappier throttle response, which is never a bad thing to have. But in addition, you may need to have a pcm tune to accompany for the upgrade.
Step 3: 1LE Intake Elbow +8hp
Brands:
www.hawksthirdgenparts.com- $80
Spectre- $82
So you have the cool air and fuel mixture down, but need a faster way of getting it into your manifold? No problem. A high flow intake elbow is a perfect way of getting rid of the restrictive unit from your engine for a smoother, more free flowing elbow that can deliver when you need it.
Step 4: Throttle Body Air Foil +11hp
Brands:
Tpis- $67
Holley- $60
www.hawksthirdgenparts.com- $36
These are very simple little mods that you can install in mere minutes while allowing more air to enter into your manifold in a smooth manner. A throttle body airfoil bolts directly on to your throttle body and evens out the incoming air between the two plates. Think of it as a police officer guiding traffic.
Step 5: 160 degree thermostat
Brands:
SLP- $30
Hypertech- $20
Lingenfelter- $15
Summitracing- $13
Remember what we talked about earlier in step one about the engine running and performing better when its running temperature is cooler? Well heres another way to get those radiator fans activated quicker and releive your engine of all that heat. A low temperature thermostat will provide a better activation time of your fans and beleive it or not, increase engine performance and ensure component life of your parts.
Step 6: Headers and O/R Ypipe +15-25hp
Brands:
Lpp- $475
Edelbrock- $430
Hooker- $385
BBK- $380
Pacesetter- $330
Dynatech- $310
Ebay- $prices vary upon dealer
Ahh the headers. You have everything you need to get the air in, so whats next? Getting the air out of course. With a new set of headers, youll have a better exhaust flow and better scavenging so that all those noxious fumes can get the heck out of your engine quicker. Of course, there are many different styles(Shorties, block hugger, mid tube and long tube). THe choice is always yours.
Step 7: Exhaust system +12-15hp
Brands:
Corsa- $1250
Borla- $760
SLP- $430
Magnaflow- $408
Hooker- $350
Flowmaster- $315
Dynomax- $290
Custom Exhaust systems- $depends on what you pick
The final stage in your getting rid of those nasty leftovers from the combustion cycle. An exhaust system will get rid of those gasses soner, while also giving your car that agressive muscle car tone that turns heads and keeps people wanting more. Actual kits may vary and depending on your budget, a custom exhaust system may be the way to go. Just make sure you have a decent exit pipe, muffler, and exhaust tips to go along with it.
Step 8: Underdrive pulley +10hp
Brands:
SLP- $155
BBK- $70
An underdrive pulley is essential. It lets the engine turn your accesories slower so that your rotating assembly doesnt have to work as hard. This is a very smart upgrade when thinking about a cam in the future.
Step 9: 12v deep cycle or race Battery
Brands:
Kinetic Racing- $305
Optima- $200
Braille- $194
Duralast Gold- $100
This is not really a necessary upgrade, but it definitely helps when youre keeping everything electrically running in peak performance with a racing or deep cycle battery. Because we all know, that a dead car is never a fun car lol. Another great supporting mod is the 1-gauge battery cables from Summit Racing for better current throughout the vehicle.
Step 10: Performance tires (V-rated street/strip)
Brands: *Note: All pricing varies on your local tire vendor
BFgoodrich
Mickey Thompson
Hoosier
Nitto
Kuhmo
Cooper
Toyo
Yokohama
Falken
Maxxis
Firestone
Protrac
Racemaster
Pirelli
Goodyear
Michelin
The key to getting all that power onto the pavement. Performance tires will help you to better grip the ground and keep contact so that you dont end up in a ditch. They generally have better traction than conventional tires and will improve those 1/4 mile times.
