Default LT1 to LS1 PCM Swap

I saw a posting on another forum that someone removed the opti from their 96 and did a complete LS1 PCM swap. I didn't know that could be done until I saw it so I did some research. Well I found a kit that gives you the PCM, harness, coilovers, cam sensor, reluctor wheel, everything. I'm not looking to do it, but I'm just wondering why someone would spend over $1,500 to switch the PCM? Are the LS1 PCMs that much better than using an opti?

i have looked into switching mine and i would have to change to much. the newer system is easier to troubleshoot and is more responsive. also does away (for the most part) with the 400 dollar opti.

Using the LS1 PCM allows you to get rid of the Opti and also allows you to use coil packs straight off the factory LS1 harness, and you have OBD II. You can do it cheap yourself if you can find an LS1 PCM and harness, then the only other stuff you need is the optical 24X stuff. I'm thinking about doing this after I get back from my year in the desert if I keep my car.

You can use an ordinary LS1 harness? I saw this site (I googled efi connections kit) and it said they sell a harness they made to plug into LT1 motors with LS1 PCM. This whole kit is +$1500. Would it be worth it or could you find everything in a pull yard?

And craby, yours is OBD1 so I see why it would be too much. Would it be easier for me since its already OBD2?

You can use the LT1 harness with the LS1 PCM but you have to repin the connection the PCM. Or you can use the LS1 and you have to make some modifications to fit the different sensors for the LT1, which I've read is the easiest way to do it without buying the custom harness from efi.

I've seen some cheap LS1 PCM's on ebay and craigslist for under $100, and some LS1 harnesses for under $200. So I think piecing it together would be a cheaper deal, which is what I planned on doing, if I do it.

Oh ok, so if I found everything from a pull yard, I could easily do it? The more I read about it, the more it makes me want to do it lol

Um, you need to look at the 24X stuff on efidirect.com, because you might need a different timing cover.

Yeah I know I would need a new cam sensor and 24x relcutor wheel at least. Ill have to look into it more if I do decide to do it. Seems like a good idea and should be easier to tune as well.
