Two cycle engines run fine, with no cams at all. LOL
But there are also some other weird combinations like the old GM X71 2 cycle diesels. No intake cam or valves, but a roller cam for the exhaust sidewith 4 exhaust valves per cylinder. Engine used a blower to pressurize the crankcase and intake air was let in through a window in the cylinder wall.

Rotaries suck and i stand by it... check this out:
2002 Mazda RX-7 Spirit R Type A
Horsepower: 280 @ 6500 rpms
Torque: 231 ft/lbs @ 5000 rpms
Weight: 3,400 lbs
Transmission: 5 spd. manual
Engine: 13B-REW Twin Rotary
I know its alot of hp for alil dorito powered rotary but it doesnt really have much on a LT1 camaro even and LS1s will walk em (thats why they drop LS1s into Rx7s..)

wow, thanks. im well aware of that very popular swap after they blow up the rotary. my first car was a 84 rx7 that i put in a 383. did you know that if it wasnt for the oil crisis in the late 70's the corvette was going to be a mid engine 3 rotor?
