95% of the time when we see a work order that just says low oil pressure it is a gage system issue.
When the work order say "Tic noise" and low oil pressure most of the time it is just the classic GM lifter issue or the motor is getting tired and we up the oil thickness. Worn motors can run years like this.
When the work order says "some bad event happened" and now I have a "tic noise" and low oil pressure. Bad event could be the car over heated, oil plug fell out, Filter come loose, someone way over filled the oil ect... We confirm the low pressure and if it a lower mileage car we may cut the filter in half to try to figure out how bad it is but in the end it is a guess. Sometimes these motors will tear themselfs a part in a few days something they will limp a long with heavy oil in them but it is a real crap shoot. I know I would not drive it farther then I was willing to have it towed. It will most likely spin a rod or main bearing and then seize up.

IN other words he should stick a oil pressure tester gauge to see what the oil pressure really is over guessing and wasting money. How many times as some one asked a question and it sounded like one thing, but was completely unrelated to what they described.

I had the same issue with a 95 3.4, and it was only the oil pressure 'gauge' sending unit. The part was only $25 and very easy to replace. Except they do break easy! On the 3.4, its located next to the oil filter and has a wiring harness leading to it with the actual sensor and connector protected by a cylindrical insulated foam. They leak too as they're going bad. Hope that helps.
