Default Low Coolant Sensor

So today on my way home froom school my low coolant light comes on as I am pulling onto my street. When I get the car home I noticed a lot of smoke coming from under the hood and it really started to worry me. upon further inspection I noticed that the sensor on the back of the radiator on the right side had somehow blown off and was just hanging by the wires. I hooked it back up and refilled whatever coolant I had lost but the light is still on and I don't know why. The manual says the light should go out once i turn the car off but it hasn't so I am asking you gys. Do I need to reset something or do you think my sensor went bad while dangling around?

Unplug the wires drom the sensor and short them with a jumper. If the light goes out then the sensor is bad. If the light stays on, there is a broken wire.

Thanks for the reply pete but the light actually went out after restarting the car like 6-7 times. Not in a row but just from driving. The time it did go out I was parked on a fairly steep hill however. Either way the light went out and there is no more smell so I think I am good now. Thanks.
