Default Late shifting!?

Hey guys, well im proud to say I bought a '94 Z28 automaticlast week and I love it. I want to get it to the track and get some ETs on it but ive noticed that I have one big problem. When I floor it in first gearthe rpms keep climbing butit doesnt shift to secondtil I let off the gas. Last night it went all the way up to 6 grand and I had to let off in fear of blowing my engine. All the other gears seem to shift smoothly. I just dont know..

Did the previous owner edit the PCM at all? You can reset shift points with a Hypertech programmer so it's possible that it's been edited. If you want them back to stock you'd have to reprogram it again, or you could have the car tuned by a shop the specializes in LT1's and they should be able to get you set up.

Maybe mine has been reprogrammed, but when floored, it does the exact same thing. It does shift at about 6 grand during wot. I think as long as you arent kissing 7 grand and the motor isn't seing 6 grand for more than a second, you're probably ok. From what I've heard, the lt1 in stock form has no problems with a little past redline. I used to flog thr crap(7k+) out of the 283 in my old chevelle and after years of abuse the worst that ever happened was a broken belt. I had a 350 on an engine stand ready to go in so I didn't care. I also agree on checking the fluid...read the manual on that one, it's quite an ordeal as you just can't check an auto like you do the oil.

According to GM FSM
1) 1-2 Shift valve sticking
2) Damaged or mispositioned spacer plate or gasket
3) 1-2 shift solenoid problem
4) 2-4 servo assembly
5) 2-4 band assembly
Try full fluid change & refill with DEXTRON (my suggestion) All those items can be caused by clogged passages or sticking.

I had the same problem with my 94. I tried changing the fluid but it didnt help. My tranny's 3rd gear slipped a little tooso i just bought a whole 'nother performancetranny and put it in. Shifts great now!
With the 3.73 gearsit bites 2nd very nicely now. Its pretty amazing how much faster these cars can be just by putting gears and a tranny in.
