THe heat shields have nuts that hold them on to the studs in the manifolds. Mine came off really easy and none of the studs broke. Look on the exhaust manifolds you should see the nuts. If you have the 2000 or newer you will not have to worry about this since the redesign of the manifolds make spark plug access easy.

My car is a 99 and there were 10mm nuts holding the heat shields to the manifolds. you cant miss them they are silver colored and attached to the top and sides of the rusty colored manifolds. If you dont have the silver shields then you just have to figger out how to get a plug socket in there. Remember the hex on the top of a plug socket is for a box end wrench if you cant fit the ratchet in there.
