Default I think I collapsed a lifter.

Hey everyone. I was driving to work yesterday and got the car up to about 4500rpm and like a light switch flipped, it started ticking very loudly. I took the valve cover off at work and discovered this. I was able to pull the pushrod out and it’s straight as an arrow. Anyone else think it’s a collapsed lifter?

With the push rod out, look down with a flashlight and see if you can tell if the lifter plunger is stuck down. Could also be the rocker stud pulling out, you'd be able to see a gap between the stud base and the head.

I looked at the top of the lifter where the pushrod goes and couldn’t tell if the plunger was down or not. I’ll have to remove the intake to check it. Also, I haven’t checked the rocker stud. I’ll check those things when I get off work tonight! Thanks!!

Rocker nut looks tight. I'd check the stud and I'd check the rocker and see if the hole is excessively worn at all

Well. Bad news. The roller broke out of the bottom of the lifter and scattered all over the beside of the engine. There’s little fragments of metal all over under the intake. I can’t get the lifter out of the engine because it’s broke a ton the bottom and won’t slide out the top due to the damage. Idk what to do at this point.

Sorry to hear that. This would mean rough metal on the bottom of the lifter was dragging on the cam lobe. Probably not going to be a pretty picture.

Yeah I’d bet the cam is trashed. Just trying to figure out if the metal isn’t scattered through the engine hurt the bearing or if I could swap a cam and lifters and be okay. The hard part is getting the lifter out at this point.

Probably going to have to pull the cam and try and get the lifter from the bottom.

jegs 2100 bucks for short block. you got metal everywhere, dont take long to get around and you dont want to put effort and money into it and have it blow 3k down the line. if that lifter is mushroomed then your gona have to get the engine out and apart to see if you can get lifter out and if any damage has been done to block.

pull the filter and open it up, open the pleats in the filther and see if you got metal. if the lifter shattered the pieces may have stayed local, not sure i would depend on it though.
