Default How do you take the valve cover off?

Hi All,

My lifters are making that ticking noise and I want to take my valve cover off so I can check for slack in the lifters or if there is rod problems.

Anyone have any instructions on how to take off the vavle covers on a 1998 Z28 LS1?

Also, if I do find a loose lifter.. do I just tighten it down with a wrench? Is there specifc torque to these things.

Thanks!!

are you sure its not a exhaust leak? if i knew anthing about ls's it would help. i know you have to take the intake manifold off to get the valve covers off. thats about it. i surprised noone has come back for ya, i can move this to the ls tech section if you want. may get a little more help there. maybe if no response by moring ill do that.

Does the sound go away after the engine warms up? If it does it may not be a lifter but the normal piston slap sound that these engines make when they are cold. The 2001+ LS1 engine had a different piston that didnt make as much noise.

Even if your problem is the lifter tighening up is not a good idea. Most of the time when you get a single lifter noise it is because a lifter will not pump up all the way. If you tighen it then it decides to "pump up" like it should it will cause all kinds of issues and may cost you a motor.

Try some seafoam in the oil, run it a day then change the oil with mobil one or better oil and see if it the lifter comes around.
