how to change coolant.

To flush out the coolant system would i just drain the radiator. Fill it back up with water from a hose. Let the engine run on straight hose water and than drain the radiator again. Repeat this process and than fill it back up with coolant and distilled water. Would the water from the hose rust anything in my engine if it ran through it. Or is this not the way to flush it out. This is a way i was told. I dont know how else to do it.

yes you can do it that way, the antifreeze has rust inhibitors so as long as you refill with a mix then your ok. there are several different ways to flush the system. allot of the guys use a flush additive that you add to the water when doin the flush. seems to work pretty good. if the radiator is really dirty i have heard that its best to just take the radiator out to clean it and sometimes that wont do it. there may be a thread on it in the how to and faq sticky. shbox has a flush the heater core http://shbox.com/1/how_tos.html if your having issues with the cooling system it would probly be a good idea to flush the heater core separate.

never really thought about it, we have always had good clean water, if your concerned and have allot of minerals in your water you may want to filter it. all the flushes i have seen we just used the garden hose. the flush kits, you put it in, run the motor for a short time and flush with clean water, never used it but thats the way i understand it. im sure theres directions with the kit.

Peak makes a flush kit for like $10 that works really well and have used it personally to flush my car. I ran straight water from my hose when I did it and haven't had a problem, but like Craby, my water is really clean no matter what it's coming out of so I didn't really worry about it, but I can't see it being really harmful if it's run for a few minutes. Make sure you pull the overflow tank out and run water through that. You'll be surprised how much gunk gets in there. Also, run with the heater on so you clean out the heater core too.
As for filling it up. For a DD, always run 50/50 mix of antifreeze. First it's easier since there is no measuring and it costs the same if not less and like others mentioned it helps lubricate the water pump and prevent freezing and cracking the block. As for color of antifreeze, these days, pretty much all of them are able to mix with each other, though mixing them gives some ugly colors. I've always run regular Prestone 50/50 (non-DexCool) antifreeze without issues.
