you want a 50/50 mix. the cooling system holds about 3 gal dry and a little over 2 gal if your doing a drain and refill. probly be a good idea to do a flush while your at it.

so buy 1.5 gallons straight coolant and 1.5 gallons distilled water? and i have like .2 gallons at home of coolant so if i just bought a gallon and had 1.2 coolant and 1.8 distilled water any ideas on what of a temp that would be good at. I store the car in the winter so i wouldnt want it to freeze. If i should just get the 1.5 and 1.5 i can do that.

copied from here Antifreeze Low Temperature Protection i use the green stuff in all my vehicles.

6. Antifreeze Low Temperature Protection
a. Do not add 100% antifreeze directly to radiator.

b. Use 50/50 Ethylene Glycol antifreeze to protect cooling system for temperatures down to -34° F (-37° C). Use 50/50 Propylene Glycol antifreeze to protect cooling system for temperatures down to -27° F (-33° C). Use 50/50 antifreeze to top off or to refill a cooling system that requires the additional coolant for any reason.

c. Use type 60/40 blend antifreeze to protect cooling system for arctic temperatures. CAUTION Never mix Arctic type antifreeze with water or inhibitor. Always use Arctic type antifreeze full strength. Water can not be mixed with Arctic type antifreeze because water will freeze at 32° F or 0° degrees C.

d. A mixture of 60/40 Arctic type Ethylene Glycol antifreeze will provide freeze protection down to -62° F (-52° C). A mixture of 60/40 Arctic type Propylene Glycol will provide freeze protection down to -56° F (-49° C). Use 60/40 antifreeze to top off or to refill a cooling system that requires the additional coolant for any reason. If antifreeze does not meet the freeze point for Ethylene Glycol or Propylene Glycol, users should replace it with new coolant.

antifreeze has a lubricant in it for the waterpump. soo you would also need to add waterpump lubricant to it or get antirust additive with lubricant in it.

The car was designed to use antifreeze and thats probably your best bet if you want longevity out of your pump.

-5 C = 23 F. That's below freezing, so why wouldn't you want to use an antifreeze? All it takes is one fluke day that drops way low and that could be enough to crack your block.

I don't see why you would want to use anything else but it's your car
