Red face Hot at idle, what to order?

Hey guys,

I purchased a 95 3.4 last week after selling my 94 the same day. Its a great car, however it has got
an issue,it overheats at idle, but cools down while cruising...the fan doesn't run, even when the ac is on,so I'm assuming I found the issue.

-I guess I need to order a cooling fan motor?
-Whats the name of the sensor that activates the fan based on coolant temp called?
-Is it a dual fan or single fan setup?

Other than that,I plan on replacing the thermostat, flushing the radiator, and replacing the upper and lowers hoses.

Thank you,thank you,thank you!

On a 94 V6 the (single) cooling fan is turned on by the ECM in response to engine coolant temp (ECT) sensor data. So the ECM uses the same sensor for the fuel injection system and the cooling fan. It's the one at the thermostat. The sender at the front fo the LH cylinder head is used *only* for the cluster gauge.
If your fan isn't turning on you may want to look at the relay. It's in the fuse/relay box by the ABS hydraulic unit.

you can test the fans to make sure they work by running power direct to it. if it works you know its not the fan.

I have had a few fan motors die on my old '95 3.4L...

You can get one of these too to turn on the fan whenever you want (assuming you have a motor that works ;-) ):

Thanks for all your input. I replaced the cooling fan motor, the temp sensor next to thermostat, and I swapped around the relays (knowing their not all dead),still no fan action.

However,I unplugged the pigtail to the coolant temp sensor and the fan came on,so ill roll with that now that I have a tag an insurance for it,I'm so happy to drive it!

I replaced both the pigtail and the coolant temp sensor, still nothing. Any other sensor, ect I need to check? Where are the grounds?

If you are unplugging the sensor and the fans turn on then all is good with the motor and wiring. I would just plug it back in and let the car get up to temp and see what happens. I have a 2 fan system in my car and the PCM turns the first fan on with the ignition and the second one at temp.

Well,I've gone through most of the possible culprits.

New fan motor
New relay
Fuses are all good
New temp switch
New temp switch pigtail (soldered)

I also flushed and filled the radiator, replaced the lower hose, and radiator cap for good measure.

The results: fail.

The fan still won't activate, only unless I unplug the temp switch.

It not a huge issue for now,I'm not against unplugging the temp switch to get through the city traffic,or uinplugging the relay to go on a highway trip.

Thanks for your input, ill fix this eventually.
