Helpful info for pulling fault codes from your BCM
Well, I'm an automotive student in college, and I came up with this helpful info on how to take codes from the Body Control Module. Sure is awesome having access to information about ALL vehicles on Alldata. It works pretty much the same way as flashing out OBD I fault codes. I'm not sure if you use a scan tool on later models, but this is the procedure for early BCM-equipped models like my '97. Here it is:
1. Turn ignition to RUN.
2. Turn ignition to OFF (the position between LOCK and RUN, where no accessories are on but the steering wheel is unlocked).
3. Remove RADIO fuse 17 (far lower right hand corner of fuse box).
4. Turn ignition to ACC. Should get 2 ignition chimes.
5. Within 5 seconds, turn ignition to OFF, then immediately back to ACC. Should get 3 ignition chimes. Wait 4 seconds, and the codes will be flashed out using the SECURITY light in the instrument cluster. Each code will be flashed out 3 times before moving on to the next one. Example: Code 12 would be 1 flash of the security light, a pause, then 2 more flashes.
Code Meanings:
DTC 12 - Diagnostic System Check (If your BCM is functional, this will always be displayed first, meaning that the module is working properly.)
DTC 21/31 - Courtesy Lamps Feed
(Circuit Shorted to Ground)
DTC 22/32 - Courtesy Lamps Return
(Circuit Shorted to B+)
DTC 23/33 - Retained Accessory Power (RAP)
(Circuit Shorted to Ground or B+)
DTC 24/34 - "Fasten Seatbelt" Indicator Lamp
(Circuit Shorted to Ground or B+)
DTC 25/35 - Security L.E.D. (with theft-deterrent system only)
"REMOTE CONTROL DOOR LOCK TRANSMITTER
DTCs" (w/theft-deterrent system only)
DTC 41 - Last Transmitter Message Received Valid
(with keyless entry only)
DTC 42 - Last Transmitter Message Received had Invalid ID (with keyless entry only)
DTC 43 - Last Transmitter Message Received had Sumcheck Error (with keyless entry only)
DTC 44 - Last Transmitter Message Received had Encryption Error (with keyless entry only)
DTC 45 - Receiver Processing Currently in 20 Second Lockout (with keyless entry only)
DTC 55 - Begin Configuration Display
Those of you who are having the problem with the windows and radio going out at the same time, like me, should check this out.
