Thanks. A little update on the process. I drained the oil and saw what looks like reddish oil. Looks like the oil is mixing with coolant. I always thought it would come out milkish but that might just be when mixed with green coolant. Another question by the way. What is th failure rate on cracked heads or cracked blocks. I dont have the money to go to a machine shop so i was wondering what i could do to test it at home. If it is warped then i will loan money to resurface. If anybody knows any good shops in sac let me know.

if the motor has not been overheated then your heads will probly be ok. would be a bummer to not have them checked and do the job to find out they are warped so the head gasket would blow again in short order.

One of mine was cracked and I had to replace it. Engine did over heat though. At least have them checked. Thats way too much work for the $80 it cost to have them checked and surfaced.

Took off the upper intake manifold and found this... what do you think?
Rest of the gasket looks fine

I am not sure what you are showing? the part of the gasket that is stuck? or what looks like an o-ring on its last leg. What you are showing is what i would expect to see on an orginal intake gasket that old.

I am not sure what the reddish looking oil is but anti-freeze and oil always looks like a milk shake and the milk shake goo will be al over the inside of the valve covers.

thats not oil, it is old gasket that needs to be cleaned. The o rings where BAD they had cracks and peices missing. That part of the gasket looked like it overheated real bad. The oil is from my hands

I have remote start so i dont mind letting my car warm up in the winter. Old mechanics say get rid of thermostats as soon as you get the car. New mechanics call them idiots. Any idea on what will happen if i run without it?
Without the thermostat it will just take a long time for you car to get to full temp in winter. That's the only downside to not having it.

removing the thermostat can cause the motor to run hot or overheat, coolant does not have time in the radiator to cool and the coolant runing though the motor faster gives less time for heat transfer there as well.
