Default Head Gaskets

My friend is a mechanic at Midas and said the book quoted time in changing the head gaskets on my camara (LT1) is a 13 hour job and the cost of gaskets and head bolts were about $800, plus the cost of machining my heads. So all in all if I took it to a shop it looks like a $4000 job.
So for those of you who have changed there head gaskets, does this look accurate? I mean the job doesn't look easy with so much of the engine under the cowel, and all the sensors that I'd hate to mix up..... but the book quote seems ridiculous.
How long has it taken others? and what was the cost of parts? I'd be looking to make it a driveway project so any guides out there would be helpful.

get a dealer service manual. what yr, model? 4k for a head job is a little steep. its a little over three hundred for a complete engine rebuild set of gaskets at sumit so i doubt the gaskets and bolts will put u at 8 hundred. u should be able to do them yourself for the 8 hun. mayber a little more depending on what the heads need done.

Yeah the price seems unrealilistic to me. Thanks for the info on Summit I'll check that out, and Ill pick up a service manual.
How long has this taken other people? I have some mechanical experiance, but this will be a first for me, I'm up for the task.
BTW my car is a 1997 SS

the taking apart goes fast. u should be able to do it in a week, that includes taking the heads to a machine shop to be done. label everything and take a bunch of pictures before u start and as u go for referance while putting back together. post some of em here too.
