Default Hatch issue

When I hit the hatch pop button, it pops but I have to lift the hatch by hand then pop it again for it to release. I tried adjusting the rubber stops on each end all the way out but that doesn't help. Should I try greasing up the latching mechanism or what can I do

Hmm, mine is a two-time command.
Hit the button twice

You might be talking about the key fob, in that case I know I have to hit the button twice. I'm talking about the yellow button to the left of the steering wheel on the dash. Either way though if I use the key fob or the button inside you can hear the hatch lock unlock but for some reason the hatch doesn't go high enough to "clear" the latch unless i lift it by hand and then pop it again (with either the key or the button inside)

Needs new struts, I would say.
Or maybe lube the bejesus out of the latch with WD40.

I had a similar issue with my 2000. I found a post somewhere on this forum where they offered a simple work around. I bought some springs from a local hardware store and put them on the hatch release mechanism piggyback style. I dont remember the exact spring size but the work around cost like $3 and took less than five minutes. The hatch has popped properly everytime since.
