I'm 18 years young, am currently a freshman In college and I'm about to purchase a beautiful red Chevy 'maro. It needs a lot of work before others see it as nicely as I do. Please reply and give advice on weather I should put my scarce time and money into this thing!

 

First what are the problems you KNOW about? Also the price and mileage would help. Parts aren't really expensive and the 3.8 isn't that hard to work on but the lt1 would be a lot harder for the average Joe.

 

You have some more details? Engine, trans, mileage, price? You say it needs work, what kind? All of that factors into whether or not its a good buy.

 

100 k Miles , and I'm getting it for a bit over a grand. Some issues are things like busted dash, needs window regulator, gas gauge might be out. Engine doesn't miss, and the transmission shifts smoothly

 

Paint is missing in spots, other small things like that. I think is well worth saving from a dump and getting stripped of its parts, but I'm just a boy

 

V6 or V8?

$1k for a running and driving '96 Camaro with 100k ain't bad. I'd definitely jump on it if it has the V8.

 

From my limited experience, pretty much all 4th gen Camaros have cracked dash pads. Thats not worth turning it down over. Window regulator/motor is a PITA to change on these, but its still inly a couple hour job if youve never done it before. Hopefully, youll pull the panel and find that its been done before, and that will make it exponentially easier. Fuel gauge could be a number of things, but a common one is someone bent the float arm when changing the fuel pump. Which means... new fuel pump Ask what kind of service history the guy knows on it, but dont believe everything unless he has paperwork to back it up. Which engine is in it? Thats a huge part of what maintenance and repairs will cost like RFX said above.

Well, like ive told other folks, and yet somehow failed to do myself, its worth spending $75-100 bucks to have a mechanic look at it if youre serious about buying it. Consider it a "piece of mind" fee. Worst case scenario, you spend a hundred and learn that the motors on its way out, which saves you from buying it and then having it rebuilt.
