Default Gauges go crazy. Is it the computer?

I am buying a 96 Camero Z28 for nothing. When you turn the key to the on position the gauges go crazy and the car will not do anything. No start, nothing. I am thinking I could get lucky and replace the computer. Does any one have a different opinion?

I also heard that I will have to pay the dealer to flash the box with the VIN of the vehicle I am replacing the brain with. $ 80 bucks I was quoted.

Am I on the right track?

Thanks people,

Steve

I have this posted on one other web site and everyone's telling me it could be the alternater. That just doesnt sound right but who knows. It could very well be that.
Is there a way I can check for engine codes without a computer?

Anyone in Orlando / Lake Mary?

Check your battery voltage, bad voltage will make the gages act weird.
