So I pulled out the tank and sender unit from my 95 because the fuel level sensor wasn't working correctly anymore. Figured the tank needed to be checked/cleaned out anyway, and it's not that hard of a job IMO. So, I went over my sender unit and the rubber parts are degrading (Ethanol?). Have to replace the tank seal where the sender goes, and that was easy to find. My problem lies inside the pump/bucket. There is a seal at the bottom of the pump to the bottom of the bucket that is in horrible condition, and I don't know what to replace it with. GM never provided these parts individually. I've attached some pictures. I had bought an aftermarket fuel pump a few years ago (shop down the street did the work then), and I contacted the pump manufacturer about the seal and they said maybe an O-ring would work.
Also, the bumper rubber piece between the bucket and the metal bracket is deteriorating as well.
You have a car that was designed to last 10-12 years that is 24 years old. Everything will degrade at some point, even the weather striping will crumble because of weather. I am sure ethanol would speed up the process but those car where diesigned to handle ethanol for 10 to 12 years. I am sure some fuel injection clearers are pretty hard on the rubber also.
In looking at some of the aftermarket pump assemblies, they come with a new bucket, which would have that seal, and they even have a new outer rubber bumper piece. It would be a shame to have to buy all that just to get a couple rubber parts.
Uggg, Airtex, It took me 3 tries to get a good one. First one was just to loud day one. I took the whole car to the parts store and counter guy heard it and agreed it was unacceptable the Second lasted 3 days and my car just shut down on a busy highway. 3rd one worked.
I'm thinking about buying it, and I'm not going to use the pump. The pump motor I have works great, and doesn't have very many miles on it. It's a decent price to get a new bucket/strainer/seals, etc. All the parts I need to "rehab" everything.
