Default fuel pump replacement

Hi guys, I have a 95 3.8l that the fuel pump went out on. My mechanic says it's $900 to replace it, but I've heard of people going through the trunk to save time and labor. Was hoping some of you had experience on the subject and any advise or pitfalls of going that route. Thanks

Man, I *dread* having to do this. With 131k on my car it's gonna be sooner than later though...

defffffinately do the hatch mod!!! takes only a few minutes to cut the flap. Can have a pump changed in about 15 minutes, cutting time included lol

One way to extend the life of the fuel pump is to not let the fuel level get below 1/4 of a tank. The pump is cooled by the fuel and running below 1/4 will start to expose the pump to air and cause it to get hot. Electric motors do not like getting hot they have a bad habit of burning up when they get hot.
