Default Fair?

I took my car to the shop today and found out that the coil for the 1 and 4 cylinder spark plugs went bad. They want $131 out the door to fix it. Am I getting ripped off?

i dont own a 3.8, so i just dont know which it has. COP (Coil Over Plug) has a coil over each plug, so 1 coil for each cylinder. other styles have either a single bank of coils or a dual bank of coils which sits off to the side. either way, if i could bring my car or bike in and leave only 131 in the hole w/ parts and labor i wouldnt complain much lol. only thing cheaper than that anymore is oil

Ya you are getting ripped off. The coil itself is only 40 bucks for the good ones from auto parts stores. Its not coil on plug either, they are rather easy to change. Ill have a picture for you in a moment.

Okie dokie the first one is the engine bay overview. My coils are red so they are a little more visible. Yours will probably be black, drivers side of the engine just under the cowl.

This is just a close up. I wrote on my coils when I was putting some stuff on that required theyr removal so thats what the numbers are. The coil for 1 and 4 is the very back coil.

Hell. If you need coils, I have 3 spare coils that work.

When I had my 97 3.8 the back ones went and the guy at the shop said he didn't have any jobs scheduled so he just got one that he had laying around, threw it in and it worked like a charm. He just charged me for the pack $20 and said get on the road.

oh, the coils for ls1 cars are rather expensive.....

but either way, if he is replacing 2 coils, that leaves only 50 bucks for labor.... thats not terrible
