82-2002 the camaro and firebird's were called "F-body"s and i beleave it started with "F" for firebird, and it just transferred to camaro's too. and it means that you have a fast car, lol

Camaros & Firebirds are built on a common platform (chassis & body structure). GM named that platform "F" body.

Yes, yours is an F-body. (from Wickipedia) The F platform, or F-body, was General Motors' small rear-wheel drive automobile platform from 1967 until 2002. It was based partially on the GM X platform, which was used for compact applications instead of the sporting intent of the F-Body. The only two vehicles to have been built using the F-Body platform are the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird. The fourth character in the Vehicle Identification Number for an F-body car is "F".or Firebird from 1967 to 2002.

The new Camaro will actually belong to the Zeta platform, which was developed by GM's Australian subsidiary Holden. Current vehicles to share the Zeta platform include the Holden Commodore, Pontiac G8, and in the future may share the platform with the (now concept) Chevelle, Cadillac DTS, and other various GM RWD vehicles.

So yes, the F body, sadly, died in 2002.
