Three things are required for an engine to start. Spark at the proper time, fuel in the right amount, and compression. One or more of these items is missing. So start looking. Most sudden engine failures are the result of an electrical problem which can stop ignition and fuel delivery, and outright mechanical failures such as a timing chain breaking or jumping teeth.
