difference between SS and Z28
Ugh...Spec, you're failing at your own cars...
The Firehawk was the Pontiac version of an SS. All the Firehawks were shipped from the Pontiac factory and the finishing performance parts and visual upgrades were added by SLP (starting in 1991, there was no official 1998 Firehawk but six 1998 T/A's were privately purchased and converted into SLP Firehawks for advertising for the 1999 model year). Firehawks will have RPO code BU4(1991-1992), RV6 (1993-1997) or WU6 (for 199-2002), with this you got the Firehawk external mods, upgraded cat-back, upgraded wheels and tires and some decals on your doors. (The 1991 had substiantial internal engine upgrades, but we're not in the 3rd gen section here are we...)
Now, in order for a Camaro to get an SS badge (starting in 1996) it had to be modified by SLP, minimum requirements were the visual package (hood and spoiler), Ram-air intake and the 1LE suspension package (although they used different valving in the shocks) and 17x9.5" wheels. This was RPO code R7T. On top of those modifications if you special ordered you could get further upgraded suspensions, floor mats, shift *****, short shifter etc. all installed by SLP, but they were all separate options from SLP, not from GM. The extra SLP badge you see may have been an option, but it was by no means a separate car.

The SS came with a "Ram-air" style intake that sat over the top of the motor and had louvers in the hood that fed it fresh air that was picked up by the scoop. You can replace this with any aftermarket intake, but technically it's a factory modified vehicle. If you don't want anything done to the car get a Z28, you'll pay less for it and they all have the same power potential after you start putting mods on them.
