Default diff carrier questions

can i use stock reluctor ring(carrier mounted) from my 3.42 gear set now that im installing an eaton carrier & re-gearing to 3.73.
also i noticed my new 3.73 ring gear looks about 1/8" thicker than the original 3.42 when they are laying flat beside each other, i havent compared the pinions yet but im assuming the the new pinion will have a smaller diameter(due to ratio change) to make up the difference for the thicker ring gear. i sure hope its not a 3 series vs 2 series screw up. any info would be appreciated.

if you have 3.42 and going to 3.73 then the carrier are same series. the swithc is at 3.23.

im not sure how the ring would mount on the eaton though, it may need pressing on or something. The gear will be thicker but the pinion may be smaller?? the only way if to see if it will mount unless someone else chimes in

thanx for reply maudy, mounted everything up inside housing and working fine on bench.
trouble with reluctor ring though. article i read said use the crown gear and bolts to push it on. that wasnt working so well so set it up on the press and ended up busting the reluctor ring.
turns out the eaton carrier i bought is older and the diameter of mounting surface is .060
larger than on the newer eaton carriers (my bad for not putting a calliper on them.) so now i need to order a new ring and get the machine shop at work to turn out the i.d. about 60 thou. i am having trouble distinguishing the difference in these 2 ac delco parts ,the part#'s for the ring are 26029185 & 26014607 and i really cant see any difference between the 2. possibly tooth count????anyone know. i need the 106 tooth ring. rings are only 20 bucks but i wanna make sure i order right one.
on the up side axle tubes welded in today and in the morning ill be sandblasting and painting housing. im really impressed with the TA cover. $150 but money well spent, thats one meaty lid. mounting surface is about 3/4" thick, started getting so excited i ordered the stud kit for bearing caps as well. complete rebuild should be up about 800 bucks including the rebuilt eaton carrier. oh ya anyone have anything bad or good to say about the older ratchet style 10 bolt eaton. can i run 75w synthetic in it?
one other question, am i going to need to reprogram now that im going from 3.42s to 3.73s. i got a power programmer with car when i purchased it 4 yrs ago but have never messed with it.

good job, im thinking of a rebuild but shipping to UK is a fortune, i managed to locate a 94 rear over here so i maybe getting that and welding axle tubes, and a cover but leaving the stock auburn inside and running some higher gear

I know you'll have to put the programmer on to sort out the speedo, i think the hand-helds are pretty easy to use
