Will turn over,fuel pump working but will not fire up.
Any ideas on where to start?

 

You checked fuel pressure? Noise and some pressure does not equal good fuel pressure. Next you would be to test for spark with a spark tester. They sell them at parts stores, harbor freight has them for >$5. After that you will need a GM noid light or a scope to see if the fuel injectors are firing.

Report back with what you find and we can help from there.

check both ends of coil wire. your sure you got gas in the tank?

 

Finally back to looking at the Z, sorry it took so long.


Fuel pressure gauge hooked up and motor turning over pressure is a measly 12psi.


Is this a guaranteed fuel pump failure or is there other things I need to eliminate before pulling the pump?

 

Fuel filter been replaced?

 

No it hasn't since I've had it. Is that inside or outside of the tank?
Also wondering if there's a way to test fuel regulator?

 

Normal pressure is 41-47 psi. Pull vacuum line off the regulator with car running. Pressure should rise, as this will simulate wide open throttle and should rise 3-10 psi. Also sniff the vacuum hose for fuel smell/liquid fuel. This would indicate the FPR is leaking and should be replaced. If no fuel smell in the FPR, I would say it's probably good and you're looking at a filter and pump replacement.

Fuel filter is on drivers rear floor board area, just before the axle.

FPR, pump and filter are all possible causes for low fuel pressure. Pump can be a PITA to change if you don't cut a hole in the hatch.

 

Thanks for the reply MK. I feel bad about even asking where ff was.
Can't do the vacuum test as car died going down the road at 55 and hasn't hit a lick since.
Going to replace the fuel filter and go from there.
I will cut an access hole if I have to replace pump. It is coming on when I turn the key on but I know that's not a sign that it is good.

 

Well the new fuel filter is in and here are the results;


Old fuel filter pressure test = 12psi


New fuel filter pressure test = about 42psi as soon as fuel pump cycles (key on not trying to turn motor over) quickly drops to 38psi then finally settles out around 32psi when left alone.


Could not smell or see any gas in regulator .


Tried to get it to start up and it never even offered to hit. So am I looking at a fuel pump for sure or something else I need to be looking at?
