Default cruise control problem

hey guys well yesterday i tested the cruise control for the first time and i got no response at all. i checked all the fuses and they where all good. only thing i did to the car was replace the abs relay with the fog light relay and the abs works fine and i don't think that's related in anyway. later on today i'll try to get my hands on the wireing schematics and check to see if they are any relays or just get a test light and see whats gong on. as far as i know the only problem it could be is the switch or the module under the driver side airbox. anyone had this problem before?

The problem can be a few things. The control unit, speed sensor, cable, switch on the column. Search the schematics for the locations of each unit. The failure is usually related to the control module. Your car being a 3.8L with cable throttle, should be easy to find the control unit, just follow the cable. I believe it is below the air filter (if you still have the stock filter box)

yes this is a 3.8 with the cable TB and cruise control. i'm just wondering how the hell am i going to test it without having the car like around 40 to set the cruise control. its kinda dangerous having the car with jack stands on the axle and im pretty sure its not the speed sensor the mph on my gauge are acurate. is there light thats suppose to light up on th dash to let me know the cruise control is on? im leaning towards the switch or the module. im just not sure how to test them.

Switch is easy to test... find another switch plug it in and see what happens. Only problem with that is there is a plug at both ends of the column. Check under the dash to make sure it is still plugged in (it looks different from the plug at the top) and also check for the small wires at the top to make sure one has not been broken (more common than the top plug being unplugged). Another problem with testing the switch is the price, they are not cheap. Good news is just about any GM car or truck uses a similar switch that is compatable from about 91-02 just make sure the cruise wire ends in a plug about 2 or 3 inches from the arm, and not about 10 inches away. Hope this helps you some.

I don't know if they had changed the wiring by '97, but the earlier cars would lose cruise control if the third brake lights were out.
It is something that only takes a few seconds to check out, and it would only cost you a couple of bulbs to fix if they are out.

The updated dash lost the "CRUISE" light. You just have to drive it to see if it works. Most of the time I find the light distracting, I think other drivers do to that is why they keep taking it off when they revise a car's dash.
