Car kicks out of first

Car kicks out of first
I've got a '96 manual transmission and it kicks itself out of first gear on occasions... It only does it right of the get go, and it doesn't matter if I'm driving it easy or if I'm trying to get going quick. It kicks itself out of first to neutral and then if I push the clutch all the way back in it grinds the gear sometimes if I don't wait, but not if I kick it into second. I don't know enough about manual trannys and I was hoping for some help. Maybe its the syncro but I don't know...

When a manual transmission jumps out of gear it is usually due to some internal problem or a problem with the shift linkage. Internally, look for damaged or worn shift forks, selectors, shift rail, worn or tapered gear teeth, bad synchros, and various worn out parts. In any event, except for shift lever problems, the transmission will have to be dismantled in order to fix it.

Had a similar problem with my t56. I had to hold it into reverse at times so it would lock into gear and then if I gave it any real throttle in reverse it would pop out of gear. Ended up being a back synchro and because of that, it cause vibrations on my shift rail which led to lots of vibrations in the trans. The sooner you just take it in and get it fixed, the more money it will save you.

Thanks guys. You're right on the nose with what it does in first. It sounds like its exactly like your reverse. I about half figured thats what it was but again don't do enough work on transmissions to truly know. Thanks a bunch guys, I'll get right on fixing it.
