A camshaft is responsible for working the valves for each cylinder. The 3800 has two valves per cylinder, one intake valve and one exhaust valve. The lobes on the cam open and close these valves as the camshaft rotates. Things such as lift, duration and LSA are all important to understand when looking at camshafts. I could try and spell everything out, but this guide is well written and is pretty much what you need to know: *** Cam Guide *** - LS1TECH

However, do take note that a cam swap is quite intensive and expensive if you want to do it right. Just buying a cam by itself is a mistake, you need all the supporting mods for it as well as a proper tune, one done on a dyno most preferably.
