Hey guys,

I was just coming home from work, coming onto the highway I kicked it down from 4th to 3rd to accelerate (not super hard) When i did this a big plume of white smoke came out the back of my car. I pulled over to check it out and it was dripping some tranny fluid, and had sprayed onto the catalytic converter which is what made the smoke. Does this sound like a seal or possibly an oil line? The tranny felt fine, and i drove it another 10k home, there is still tranny fluid on the dipstick and the car is a 94 lt1 auto. I cant get under it too see but im going to check it out shortly, anyone else had this problem?

 

You just going to have to get under there and see. Anything anyone says is just going to be a guess.

 

if you drove 10k it must be fine. lol. agree with gorn, gotta have a look see to find the issue. yep it could be seal, fluid coolant line or something major like a cracked case.

 

Maybe it is because deal with UK people all day long but I did assume 10K= about 6 miles.

I would not drive the car until I knew what was going on. Running low on transmiision fluid can trash a transmission very quickly.

 

Well I took the car in to my mechanic and he came up with nothing, the tranny doesn't seem to be leaking at all.
He topped up the level and I continued to drive it daily. Yesterday while going down the highway it happened again, big cloud of smoke out the back and when I pulled over, sure enough the bottom of the car was covered in transmission fluid. It seems to push out about 200ml at a time and has happened twice now, both times on the highway going around 100km/h. However when I park the car no puddles accumulate under it, and all seems well. Could it be building pressure inside and blowing fluid out through the vent? Has anyone every heard of something like this before? The next step is having the tranny pulled to figure it out but I would like to avoid that

 

i had the 4l60 in my old truck overheat pulling loaded horse trailer and it overflowed all over from the pipe at the top. i added trans cooler, changed fluid, filter and took the cooler lines lose i blew out the cooler with compressed air. it worked fine but i didnt trust it with the horses on the road so picked up a b&m trans and converter and put in.
