Blown Head Gasket & Steel Seal
#11
The smell of antifreeze is not coming out from under the hood necessarily, but after I get out of the car you can definitely smell the distinct smell of it from around the car. The bit of smoke I see coming from under the hood is coming from the upper part of the hood, to the left of the driver side windshield wiper and it doesn't smell sweet, just burnt (the smell comes through my vents). I was just assuming it was some antifreeze burning off but of course with my luck its yet another thing. I only assume it's a head gasket b/c of the antifreeze situation and 2 different mechanics at 2 different shops told me it was. The only other thing I can think of is to check that elbow.

Check the orings that are on the heater hoses to make sure they are not leaking antifreeze on the engine and it burning off. I had blown head gasket on 3.8 and it did have white smoke coming from exhaust but rarely would smell antifreeze except when it would blow it out the overflow tank. It pressurized the overflow tank and would blow the cap off it. Once we replaced the head gaskets, I still had to put in about a quart of coolant a day. Finally, while trying to figure out where the coolant was going, I accidentially moved on of the heater hoses and seen the steam coming from where it snaps in the tensioner. Replaced the orings and haven't put a drop of coolant in it since.
