Blown Head Gasket on 2002 V6
Blown Head Gasket on a 2002 V6 Camaro - Album on Imgur - has a few more pics since i couldnt fit all of them in attachments.
I dont really need help from yall wonderful people.. I just thought Id share some pictures with yall about my journey into the engine of a camaro. Ive never done this before and Ive learned SO much. Anyways, in late December I bought this 2002 Maroon V6 with 115k miles. All was well.. then it overheated on me. Well turns out, crack in the radiator. Had that fixed and all was well for about 3 weeks maybe a month and the overheating returned. This time however the car didnt really seem like it was overheating. The fans never ran any extra amount of time after the car was shut off, no steam coming from under the hood. In fact the first time it did, I pulled over and checked the coolant.. which was all the way up. It didnt feel hot so I hopped back in and saw the gage was normal. Huh, I thought. Well lets see if I can make it home. Totally normal the rest of the drive home. I tried changing the thermostat but alas.. the problem kept reoccuring every so often. It slowly got worse and I took it off the road. I figured the head gasket but I wasnt really sure. I just got the passenger side cylinder head open this morning and I was right. Partial blockage on the coolant passages, mostly the bigger passages.
If you dont know what I mean, check out the pictures in this album. There are a number of circular and odd shaped holes on the gasket and the cylinder head. Thats where the coolant flows and cools the engine. The bigger holes on the gasket were melted/gunky and blocking coolant from properly cooling the engine. This is my first time doing this and its taken me almost 30 hours just to get the heads off. A mechanic told me about 16 but im no professional and i have hardly any engine knowledge.. but now i do! Im very proud of myself and I feel even more confident now that I can definitely do/finish this job and get this car running again. I hope you enjoyed
