I know this is the "Camaro Forum," but I figured since it's the same part it wouldn't be a big deal to ask about a Firebird thing as well on here.

My Dad got a good deal on a convertible 01 Firebird awhile back, and it has a few issues to deal with. One is the driver door. A previous owner hacked it up pretty good messing with (or replacing) the window regulator/window motor. I've attached a picture.

You can see it has extra holes drilled in it, the riveted regulator holes are damaged, etc. The whole regulator shifts when the window is put up and down. Any advice on how to fix this up again? He'd like to get it as close to how it originally should be as possible, so I was thinking maybe filling the damaged and extraneous holes, redrilling them, and getting a new regulator riveted on correctly.

 

i reparied using couple washers (had two holes all messed up) and fiberglassed them in. hardest part for me was gettting them lined up and keeping them there. if memory serves i used a 2 part epoxy

 

To fill the holes, you may want to try Magnum Steel epoxy stick. Knead the resin and hardener together wearing some rubber gloves because it can irritate the skin pretty good. For best results, put one layer on without pushing it all the way through the hole, flatten it out around the edges, and then after 5-10 minutes put a second layer down and allow 5 minutes to dry. It cures completely in an hour and is basically as hard as steel.

 

Thanks for the help and ideas. I think either the high strength epoxy stick and/or some washers will work fine. I think that could hold up to getting the new regulator riveted in? I'd rather not use bolts/nuts vs getting it riveted like original.

 

the rivits are best. dont use cheap rivits or aluminum, i always use gm ones. also the rivit gun is not common, they is big. i ended up buying one.

 

i used two part and mixed in fiberglass fibers to do it. then re drilled the hole.
