On some vehicles, there is a way to set the locks by inserting key in ignition and doing a song and dance per the operators manual but you would need to find the operators manual for your particular vehicle and see if it tells you how to disable the auto lock.

I'm sure I'm wrong, but shouldn't the locks engage only after putting the car in gear? I'm just going off familiarity with automatics. If so, maybe there is a faulty relay somewhere.

Depending on what year. Up to 95 check the RAP module; 96 and newer, check the BCM (Body Control Module). Or you can always use your spare key to unlock the door. Hopefully, you don't have an add on alarm to cause confusion.

Hmm... Was this feature even available in '95? My Z doesn't seem to have it...

The RAP module was standard in all early 4th gen Camaros, in later models the RAP function became part of the BCM.

o sry it is a 1995. I have the manual and i never thought to look to see if there was a code in there. As far as i am aware the car does not have an aftermarket alarm, and i do not have a fob for the doors or nething like that. and i know that most automatics lock when put in gear but this one locks as soon as u start the car, and i do keep an extra key for emergancies but its a pain in the a$$ to have to dig in my wallet to get the spare key when its 10 degrees outside!
