Did it simply stop working or did it slowly go from cold to blowing warm air over time? Is the blower just not working? Did it ever work? You need to be more descriptive when you have an issue, this way you will get better and more helpful answers! Yes, you can fill it up, but if its empty, that means theres a leak... I would have it tested and make sure theres no leak...at that point, you may as well have the shop fill it for you.

Not sure if you misunderstood him or he was a complete moron. You never drain a system that holds pressure. That pressure protects the seals. No AC tech would advise paying someone to draw the coolant out of a none working system. Pull the fuse maybe if the compressor was locked up but you do not drain the system until right before you fix it.

The only real reason for pulling the fuse is a locked up compressor. Locked up compressor are pretty big jobs because in most cases there is metal from the compressor all through the system. It all needs flushed out on top of the compressor replacement and if the system has been without pressure you need a dryer receiver also. Normally it is a good idea to replace the dryer receiver with the compressor but if the system has as zero pressure then it more like a requirement.

Its gonna depend on what parts you insist on...if you want all GM or equivelent, its going to be alot more in parts...If youre ok with parts that may be off shore...then youll pay alot less. I just went through what youre doing. I bought my stuff from Rock Auto. Compressor, dryer and expansion valve for about $225.00 The shop cost me another $150. for vacume, leak check and 134a fill.I did the parts replacement myself.
