Since my engine has nearly 140k miles on it and Im going to have a pretty good source of income this summer and a good amount of time when i wont be driving my car Im thinking about rebuilding the engine in it and maybe getting a new cam and all the excessories that would be needed for a new cam.
Im also thinking about boring our the cyclinders. If anyone has any helpful guides on rebuilding this specific engine and any cam and or bore measuementsuggestions (such as explaining what a hot cam is) i would be greatly appreciate it. Im not wanting to build a drag car here, just give my Z maybe ~400 hp or so. I also plan on putting a new exhaust system on it to help it get to that mark.
My budget is pretty decent but it is still limited, if you guys can post any estimates on how much this would cost id love that too. 2-3k total would probably be the best range. I could go higher but it would take longer.

Well, Ipaid about $2k alone for a stock rebuild and that's the cheapest I found from the shops I trusted. I did more to it while I was doing the rebuild and the grandtotal came to about $3k, if not more. I wanted to get the LE2 heads/cam package which would make around 400hp, but I didn't have time to save money since the engine went out without letting me know it was gonna let go

to go along with what deltav said...this is why i recommend people buy lt1 blocks and build those outside of the car. that way you can still drive the car you have and build a pretty nice motor besides. and you say your budget is 2-3k, well bolt-ons alone are a good1500 probably if you get headers, catback, cai, gears, stall if auto. a head/cam package is a good 1500-2k...and a motor rebuild is like 2k

I have my stock engine sitting inside my garage and the shop that I took the enginein the car to have it balanced gave me an estimate of $2500 to rebuild the block and beef it up to a 383 and get to 400 hp. It would have been another 1k for instalation. Why not just go that way? Find a shop you trust and tell them what you need. Car will be down for a couple of weeks but there is no guess work and all the pain in the @$$ stuff gets done for you. Unless you want do the work yourself.

I want to do all of the work myself, i wont need my car for atleast 2 months. If i had to pick between buying a new block and getting all the things needed for it or just taking mine out and tearing it apart and doing the same thing what would be the advantages between the two? and the price to do so, also if i chose to get a new block and start from scratch where could i sell my old engine at and how much would i get for it.

Advantage to getting a new block is you can build it to your desire with no time limits. You can take your time and buy the best parts that are going to get you to the 400hp mark. I would be doing the same if I had the cash but my engine has new heads, cam, RR, pushrods and the block is a rebuilt and balanced one with only 24k on it. It runs well and I'm in no hurry to replace it. Unless I get a load of cash dropped in my lap.

Can you give me the name of a dependable website where i can buy all of the things required to rebuild a engine? or maybe a automotive store, nothing like advanced auto parts or any crap like that. Somewhere preferably with good prices and value.
