Normally I tell people not to worry to much about any GM product that has a lifter tap but in this case you need to know what is going on. Since you think you may have over reved it you could have rocker arm or push rod damage, it really could be anything along the valve train.

Step one would be to pull the valve cover, Inspect the spings and rockers. Start the car and locate which valve is making the noise. Then pull that rocker and check it closley and pull the push rod. If the push rod is straight and the rocker looks good, next the intake has to come off so you can inspect the lifter itself and the Cam surface.

You should beable to find a low miles FWD motor very cheap.I have seen people finding motors with less than 30k on them for under $500. Every area is different but these 3800's are very strong motors and there are a lot more of them sitting in wrecked cars then there are people looking for them. Which means make offers, If the yard is sitting on 10 of these and noone has bough one in a few weeks who knows.

Of course the yard will tell you it will not fit because that is what their books say.

lol, add a few k for parts and pieces needed to switch to another engine. the 4th generation camaro is engine specific, to change to a different size/type engine you need to change way more than just the engine.
