Default 96 Z28 engine removal

alright, im sure this gets asked alot but just recently purchased a z28 with the LT1 and need to remove the engine. It is a 96 and i need any info on whats easiest, taking out the top or dropping the suspension and cradle. No i don't have a car lift but i have a big area to work with. All info on which is easiest would be great.

What is the easiest way to go about that without a car lift?

i just got done about 15 min ago dropping an lt1 took me 40 min out the bottom is the way to go

i used a jack on both sides behind the front wheels with 3 2x4s stacked on top of each other to get the car high enough (screw the 2x4s together so the dont want to slip off each other)

just unbolt the entire k-member with the car sitting jacked up, then lift the front end up with the engine hoist.

Craby has a post where he detailed how he removed his out the bottom. He didn't use a lift either as I recall. Do a search.

Sorry, I mis-spoke. Craby posted a good guide on how to remove the auto transmission. I know that I have seen at least one pretty comprehensive guide on how to remove the engine out the bottom. Just can't seem to find it right now.

I have a PDF. Send me a PM with a email that can handle 1.5 meg attachment and I will send it to you.
That PDF doe NOT address lifting the car. You can use the jack, I just set up jack stands on the rear axle and made sure there is room for the car to pivot and I used a engine hoist to lift the front of the car. I think it is a lot faster and any engine hoist will do. Infact my 1 ton Harbor fright job had a tuffer time pulling the motor/trans out of the Kmember then lifting the car. This is a photo I found online of the setup

Okay, found this in another post on the site. I think Craby originally found and posted this link.

It is not a step by step procedure, but it does show how to rig the lift and goes over a lot of the big things to do.

i didnt use no lift but you will need one to get the engine on a stand unless you got 4 buddys to help you lift the thing also if you dont have a dolly like that leave the wheels on that way you can just grab the sway bar and pull the engine out from under the car its pretty light feeling when it can roll
