'93 with a 4l60e?
Hey guys, I have some pictures for you to look at, and I need your thoughts/opinions.
Today I got the chance to roll around under the camaro, and I noticed on the back of the transmission a plate thing had "99 4l60E" on it. Basic deductive reasoning pointed me towards the conclusion that in 1999, the transmission was swapped for a 4l60E, and I no longer have a 700r4.
Onto the pics!
EDIT: Are there any other spots I should take pics of before I roll it off the planks?

Who did you buy the car from? Does he/she know anything about it. Maybe you should go into chevy and see if its a factory swap. I don't know too much about those transmissions but it could have come with a package or that could be an option that comes with those camaros.

no other tags on the trany? if not there should be a id # on the trans pan rail. in the book it shows it on the pasenger side. first number is model yr next 2 should be model letters next is calender yr next group of #s are the julian day of yr last is shift build a and b are first shift c and h are second. not sure what those mean.
must be day and night shift.

craby: I didn't even think to take a picture of that. I saw it, but I was too enthralled in the "99 4L60E" to think to take a picture of it.
Oh well. I'll just have to get it back up on blocks once it stops raining. :P

well i believe the 700r4 was a 27 spline and the 4l60 is a 30 spline

700R4 & 4L60 is the exact same trans. GM renamed it in the early 90's.
The weaker smaller 27 spline input shaft issue is with the 1982-84 model 700R4's. As of 1985, they had the stronger 30 spline shaft. 1982-87 are the weaker ones internally, and 1988 and up are the desired ones to use.
Chevy started putting the 4L60E in trucks and vans in 1993, and in cars in 1994.
As far as your 4L60E, it could be one of two things...
The 99 marking on it suggests that is was replaced with a newer used one. Either it's mismarked and not really an "E". Or, your car could be a late 93 model and Chevy may have started using the "E" trans by then? A 4L60E wouldn't work in your car if it wasn't originally wired for it, unless someone went through a lot of trouble to convert your car to be compatible with it. And...if your car really does have a 1999 trans, you'll know right away by looking at the bellhousing. Starting in 1996, the 4L60E had a separate bolted on bellhousing. On 1995 and older models, the bellhousing is part of the trans case housing.
This article should help you determine what you have. 700R4 & 4L60 Trans.

The rewiring was the one thing that bugged me. The only real reason I could see that being of use, is if the car was originally fairly heavily modded and tunes might need to be changed on the fly, including shift points.
Yep, gotta go crawling around some more. :P haha
